From the time you conceive to giving birth your baby goes through stages of rapid growth, in order to grow and develop we need certain nutrients and minerals for our cells to function properly. As adults we get this from our diet as a foetus our baby can only get nutrients from what the mother provides: therefore is it essential pregnant women eat a balanced and nutrient dense diet to supply nutrients for herself and her baby.
Some nutrients required during pregnancy include zinc, essential fatty acids, iron, vitamin D, folic acid, iodine, chromium, B6, B12, choline and lutein. Always talk to your practitioner to determine the correct dosages of nutrients you need.
As well as nutrition it is helpful for expecting mums to aim for good quality sleep each night, drink plenty of water during the day, regular relaxation practices, maintain fitness with gentle exercise, reduce stress as much as possible and limit toxin exposure.
A naturopath can help guide you to ensure you and your baby are receiving all the required nutrients for a healthy baby and pregnancy. I can also help with any symptoms of nausea, reflux, fatigue, muscle cramps and constipation.
Probiotics during pregnancy:
Probiotics have such a broad range of benefits all depending on what strain of bacteria is used. Some probiotics decrease inflammation, some boost the immune system, some reduce allergies and some directly impact our babies during pregnancy.
Probiotics are beneficial throughout pregnancy and breast feeding as they impact the mothers gut microbiome which in turn influences the baby’s gut microbiome, digestive and immune function.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus strains increase the anti inflammatory components within breast milk and reduce the likelihood of infants developing eczema and allergies when given to mothers during pregnancy and breast feeding.
Bifidobacterium animalis spp lactis strains help balance blood sugar levels for expecting mothers which may help reduce the risk of insulin resistance.
Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium longum both support the development of your baby’s gut microbiome and improve their immune system responses.
